Why is my furnace blowing cold air instead of heat?
A furnace blowing cold air is usually caused by one of four things: the thermostat fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, a dirty flame sensor is shutting the burners down seconds after ignition, the system has tripped a safety limit from restricted airflow, or the pilot or igniter has failed. Set the fan to AUTO first. If the air is still cold, the burners are not staying lit, and that needs a technician.
What is actually happening inside the furnace
A gas furnace heats in a set order. The igniter glows, the gas valve opens, the burners light, a flame sensor confirms the flame is real, and only then does the blower start pushing warm air. If any step in that chain fails, the furnace shuts the gas off but the blower may still run. That is the cold air you feel.
It is a safety design, not a defect. Your furnace would rather blow cold air than pump unburned gas into your house.
What should I check first?
Three checks cost nothing.
- Thermostat fan setting. If the fan is set to ON, the blower runs constantly, including between heating cycles. You feel room temperature air and think the furnace failed. Switch it to AUTO and see if the problem disappears.
- Air filter. A clogged filter starves the furnace of airflow. Heat builds up inside the cabinet, the high limit switch trips, and the burners shut off while the blower keeps running to cool things down. This is the single most common cause we find.
- Supply registers. Closed or blocked vents in several rooms create the same restriction as a dirty filter.
Why does the furnace light and then quit after a few seconds?
That specific pattern, ignition followed by shutdown roughly five to ten seconds later, points at the flame sensor almost every time. The sensor is a thin metal rod that sits in the flame. It confirms the burners actually lit. When soot or oxidation coats it, the furnace cannot see the flame it just made, so it assumes ignition failed and closes the gas valve.
Cleaning the sensor is a routine part of a maintenance visit. If the furnace tries three times and then locks out completely, that is the same story reaching its safety limit.
What are the other common causes?
- Failed hot surface igniter. The igniter is a fragile element that cracks with age. No glow means no ignition. You will hear the inducer motor and the gas valve click, but nothing lights.
- Tripped high limit switch. Usually caused by the airflow problems above. Repeated tripping cracks heat exchangers over time, so it is worth fixing the cause and not just resetting.
- Condensate blockage on a high efficiency furnace. A 90 percent furnace makes water. If the drain clogs, a pressure switch stops the furnace from firing.
- Frozen or blocked exhaust. Snow, ice, or a bird nest in the PVC intake or exhaust pipe outside will lock out the furnace. Check the pipes on the side of the house after a storm.
Is this dangerous?
A furnace that will not light is not usually dangerous, because the safeties are doing their job. Two situations are different, and both mean you shut the system off and call.
- You smell gas. Leave the house first, then call the gas utility, then call us.
- Your carbon monoxide alarm sounds. Get everyone outside and call 911. A cracked heat exchanger can leak combustion gases into your air stream, and it is not something to diagnose yourself.

Leave the house before doing anything else. Do not flip switches or use your phone inside. Call the gas utility from outside, then call an HVAC contractor. If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone out and call 911.
