Are ductless mini splits worth it, or should I extend my central AC?
A ductless mini split is worth it when you need to condition a space your central system cannot reach well, such as a garage, sunroom, finished attic, bonus room over a garage, or an addition. In those cases it is normally cheaper and more effective than extending ductwork from a system that had no spare capacity. A mini split is usually not the better choice for an entire existing home that already has usable ducts.
What a mini split is
A ductless mini split has an outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor units by a small refrigerant line set through the wall. There is no ductwork. Each indoor head has its own thermostat, so each space is its own zone.
Most are heat pumps, so the same unit cools in summer and heats in winter.
When is a mini split the right call?
- Garage or workshop. Extending house ducts to a garage is often against code and always inefficient. A mini split conditions the space on demand without touching the rest of the house.
- Sunroom or three season porch. These rooms have a heat load nothing else in the house shares. Adding them to the main system usually just makes the whole house uncomfortable.
- Bonus room over the garage. The classic Kansas problem room, with an uninsulated space underneath and an attic above. A dedicated head fixes it without rebalancing the whole house.
- Finished attic or basement. Spaces converted after the original ductwork was designed.
- Additions. If the existing system was sized for the original house, adding square footage to it makes every room worse.
- Homes with no ductwork at all. Older properties with boilers or radiant heat can get air conditioning without tearing into ceilings.
When should I stick with central air?
- Your home already has usable ducts serving every room. Replacing a functioning central system with a whole house ductless setup rarely pays back.
- You dislike the look of wall mounted heads in main living areas. Ceiling cassette and low wall options exist, but they cost more.

What are the honest trade offs?
Advantages: no duct losses, real per room zoning, quiet indoor operation, high efficiency, and heating plus cooling in one system.
Disadvantages: the indoor head is visible on the wall, the up front cost per zone is higher than adding a supply run, filters in each head need regular cleaning, and a multi zone system means more equipment to maintain.

Do mini splits heat well in Kansas?
Cold climate models hold real heating capacity below freezing, and for a garage or bonus room they are typically the most practical heat source available. How many zones do I need?
One outdoor unit can support multiple indoor heads, but each head must be sized for its own room. Oversizing a head is the most common mistake we correct. An oversized head cools the space quickly, shuts off, and never runs long enough to remove humidity, which leaves the room cold and clammy. This matters more with a mini split than with central air because each zone is small.
