Why is one room in my house always hotter than the rest?
Uneven room temperatures are usually caused by the duct system, not the air conditioner. The four common causes are undersized or crushed ducts feeding that room, duct leakage into an unconditioned attic, poor attic insulation above the room, and a return air path that cannot pull air back out. Measure the airflow at the vent first. Weak airflow means a duct problem, and a bigger AC will not fix it.
Why the AC is usually not the problem
An air conditioner makes cold air. The duct system decides where that air goes. If one room is always the worst room, the cold air is being made and then lost, restricted, or never delivered. Putting a larger system on the same ducts just makes the good rooms colder and the bad room only slightly better.
This is the single most common reason a homeowner tells us the new system they bought elsewhere did not fix anything.
How do I tell if it is a duct problem?
Hold your hand at the supply register in the problem room while the system runs, then do the same in a room that feels fine. You are comparing two things: how cold the air is and how hard it is blowing.
- Cold air, weak flow: a duct restriction. The run is undersized, crushed, disconnected, or too long.
- Weak flow and not very cold: the duct is probably leaking or running through a hot attic and losing its cool before it arrives.
- Good cold flow but the room is still hot: the load in the room is beating the delivery. Look at insulation, windows, and whether air can get back out of the room.
What causes it in Leavenworth and metro homes?
- Attic duct heat gain. A Kansas attic can hit 130 degrees in August. Flex duct running through that attic with thin or compressed insulation delivers noticeably warmer air by the time it reaches the far bedroom.
- Leaky duct joints. Duct tape fails. Joints that were never mastic sealed leak conditioned air into the attic or crawlspace. You paid to cool that air and it never reached a room.
- Crushed or kinked flex duct. Storage boxes, a foot through the attic, or a sharp turn behind a joist can collapse a run to a fraction of its capacity.
- Additions and finished rooms. Sunrooms, bonus rooms over garages, and finished attics are frequently tapped into an existing trunk that had no spare capacity.
- No return path. Many homes have one central return. Close the bedroom door and supply air has nowhere to go, so it stops flowing in. That is why the room is worse at night.
Why second story rooms are their own problem
Heat rises, the attic sits directly above, and the duct runs to the second floor are the longest in the house. All three work against you at once. A single system sized and balanced for the whole house will almost always favor the first floor unless someone deliberately balanced it.
What actually fixes it?
In rough order of cost, from least to most:
- Open the return path. Undercut the door, add a transfer grille, or add a jump duct so air can leave the room.
- Balance the dampers. Slightly restricting the closest rooms pushes more air to the farthest ones. This is free to adjust and often overlooked.
- Seal and insulate the ducts. Mastic on the joints and proper insulation on attic runs recovers air you are already paying for.
- Resize or reroute the run. If the duct feeding the room was never big enough, no amount of balancing fixes it.
- Add a ductless mini split. For a bonus room, sunroom, or converted attic, a dedicated mini split solves the problem without touching the rest of the house.
- Add zoning. Motorized dampers and a second thermostat let the upstairs call for cooling on its own.
How do we figure out which one you need?

Accurate cooling numbers need an outdoor temperature between 51 and 84 degrees, so a scorching afternoon is actually the wrong time to measure.
